16. Moving Forward
Cookie slept on the information she had gathered over the previous few days. When she arrived at the office on Thursday morning, she compiled her report and brought it into Mike Donnellyâs office.
âWhereâs your smile, Cookie?â the chief asked.
âI must have left it at home.â
âThe weatherman said weâre going to get a storm today and then cooler temperatures. Be glad for that.â
Cookie smiled. âIf you insist.â
âHowâs the Scott situation coming?â
âItâs a matter of perspective. Thereâs no body . . . thatâs good.â Cookie gave a sick laugh.
âNot much success, then?â Mike asked.
âThatâs an understatement. As I mentioned before, I talked to Minneapolis and theyâre happier than pigs in slop to dump it in our lap. I was told that Scott lives here, so itâs our jurisdiction. Theyâll help all they can, but . . .â
âI get it,â Mike answered. âSo youâre getting nothing from them?â
âNo.â
âBut in fairness to them, why should they be involved, at least at this time?â
âI know. Iâm just feeling sorry for myself,â Cookie said. âChief, I havenât found anything to show that the missing man ran on his own. On the contrary, everyone says itâs the last thing he would have done. Itâs that pending judgeship.â
âSo, itâs pretty well-established there wasnât an auto accident, right?â Mike asked.
âRight, no car, no victim.â
âAnd you said that there is nothing pointing to him disappearing voluntarily?â he asked.
âThatâs correct.â
âSo, Cookie, that leaves just abduction or possibly murder.â
âThatâs the conclusion Iâve come to, Chief, but with no body and no car, where do we go?â
âGood question. Any suspects?â
âThereâs a guy who loaned him money.â
âThe poker player,â Mike said.
âYes, the poker player. But I canât figure a motive there. If a guy owes you money, how do you hope to collect from him if heâs dead?â
âMurder does seem like a drastic solution to a loan gone bad,â Mike suggested. âBut there could have been an argument that got out of hand. In the heat of the moment kind of thing.â
âThat does make sense,â Cookie agreed, âbut not the way Scott disappeared.â
âBut Cookie, we donât know how he disappeared,â Mike said.
âNo, not precisely,â she responded, âbut if his wife talked to him on the way home, and he didnât make it there, then it had to be somewhere in between.â
âWhy donât you follow up with everyone and see what kind of alibis they have. Itâs all we have,â Mike suggested. âWho else you got?â
âThis Nugent fellow from Greenwood may have an axe to grind because of his kidâs arm.â
âExplain.â
Cookie gave Mike the Readerâs Digest version of the story.
âThin,â Mike said.
âI know, but itâs the best thing weâve got so far.â
Mike reflected on that. Then he asked, âWhat about the garage thing?â
âPossible racial motive. Iâm going to interview those planning committee members, but are you going to kill a guy because he yelled at you? I know we have to check everything, but like you said before, pretty thin.â
âDoes that Nugent fellow have an alibi?â Mike inquired.
âPerhaps not. His family was out of town, and he says he was home alone on that entire Friday night.
